Business Informatics
Information technology has become an essential part of products, services and business processes in companies and organisations. In order to compete and survive in their markets, organisations have to be able to make correct decisions when selecting and adopting information systems. The systems have to support business operations well, and the continuos development of information technology, business processes and organisational structures requires close cooperation between business units. Knowledge of management of information systems has become central for almost every organisation. Information systems science is a field of science that studies utilisation of information and communication technology (ICT) in enterprises and other organisations. The areas of study of the research projects are central to business operations, and the results can be directly applied in business management.
The aim of information systems studies at TSE is to facilitate the understanding and management of information systems, hence we see our focus to be in business informatics. The emphasis in the courses lies on the role of information technology in business and management of information resources.
Information systems science in TSE has the following gravity points in research: management of information systems, network and business models, work informatics and wellbeing & health-care information systems. The department of Management is a member of the Turku Centre for Computer Science (TUCS), which is a joint research institute of University of Turku and Åbo Akademi University.
